A Legacy of Migrant Work
Lwandiso Botozo, a multifaceted artist born in Cofimvaba in rural Eastern Cape, navigates the intersections of identity, history, and storytelling through his dynamic artistic practice. Raised between Stellenbosch and Khayelitsha, and later spending five years in Franschhoek at Bridgehouse boarding school, Botozo’s journey is shaped by varied experiences and influences.
Botozo pursued his passion for art, completing both a BA and an MA in Visual Arts (cum laude) at Stellenbosch University. Mentored by renowned figures like Vuyile Voyiya and Jacob van Schalkwyk, he draws inspiration not only from visual artists but also from musicians such as Culolethu ‘Culoe’ De Song and Jabulani Hadebe, aka Sjava.
Botozo’s artistic style, characterised by collage, framing, and narrative storytelling, reflects his deep engagement with questions of identity and history. His works, exhibited in venues like GUS and Zeitz MOCAA, explore South Africa’s political landscape and his personal experiences within it. Botozo’s commitment to community engagement is evident through his involvement in teaching printmaking at Stellenbosch University and Michaelis School of Fine Art, as well as mentoring children at foster homes in Kayamandi through the Orange Art Project.
Botozo’s artistic journey is one of exploration and introspection, and of building meaningful connections with both his audience and his community.
